Clean
drinking water is something that most of us take for
granted.
Clean drinking water is something that most of us take for
granted. We assume that our community water department makes
sure that safe clean water reaches our homes and is ready for
us at the turn of a faucet.
The real truth is that the water that reaches our homes is
still filled with all sorts of chemicals, bacteria and debris
that can make it at a minimum bad tasting to at worst
toxic.
Consider that most community’s water treatment plants are
decades old and delivery lines sometimes 75 years or more old.
The technologies these plants employ are outdated and the
delivery lines filled with cracks from tree roots and ground
shifts.
For all of the above reasons and more, you need to have a
home water filtration system to protect yourself and your
family. Perhaps most importantly, you need to be sure to keep
your water filtration system maintained by keeping regularly
replacing the filtration material.
There are a number of different options for adding water
filtration to your home, counter-top pitchers, on-the-faucet
models, under-sink models and whole house models allowing you
to find one that meets your needs and is within your
budget.
Most filtration systems employ a cartridge or canister that
contains the filtration materials. The better models use
granulated activated charcoal as a part of their filtration
system in the cartridge/canister.
This inert chemical is primarily carbon that is filled with
millions of tiny holes that trap the impurities as the water
molecules travel through it.
Cheaper systems use standard charcoal which is much less
effective and should generally be avoided. Some of the most
expensive models employ Chlorgon, a mixture of activated
charcoal and rare minerals and salts that further filter the
water.
Again, pick the style that fits your needs and budget. In
general terms the filter cartridge/canister will last about six
months with normal household use.
Some models of filter systems come with use indicators built
into them. For larger under sink or whole house models you can
opt to have the manufacturer ship you new cartridges/canisters
when they are due to be replaced; although there is an extra
cost to this option, it eliminates you having to keep track of
something else in the house.
If you live in an area with especially poor water or if
there is a one-time disruption to your water supply like a
water main breaking, change your filter more often.
If all of this still sounds like to much for you to take on
by yourself there are an increasing number of companies that
will professionally install your water filtration system and
maintain it on a regular basis.
The world is increasingly being polluted by all manner of
chemicals, bacteria and viruses. This is a fact of modern life.
What ever route you choose for your water filtration be sure to
keep up on having a fresh filter in place.
At the end of the day you can rest assured knowing that you
are taking an active role in keeping your family happy and
healthy.
