You’re probably asking yourself what you need to consider if
you’re in the market for a whole house water filter and/or
softener. This article should help point you in the right
direction.
First of all, you want a filtration system that uses a
multi-stage NSF-certified process. If your home is connected to
the city water service, the whole house filtration system
should be your first priority. Why? Because you will want to
remove the chlorine before it mixes with the resins in the
softener.
You won’t have this problem if you use well water, however.
IN any event, you will want to have the whole house filtration
system treat your water only after the softening process is
completed.
This will mean that the last system to filter your home
sends clean, filtered water to your shower, washing machine and
faucets. But what about filtration processes that also soften
the water at the same time?
Well, you must remember that the primary purpose of
filtration is to make the water as healthy as possible.
Softening water, however, adds sodium, so it makes sense that
the softening process is not going to give you the purest water
in the world.
Indeed, you can even taste the salt in it. So, if you do
have a softener, make sure your water is filtered before you
drink it. Why, you may ask, do I need to soften my water?
Basically, you will want to soften your water to remove high
levels of hard minerals like calcium. But many whole house
filtration systems can remove calcium and other heavy elements
down to five microns while leaving other healthy minerals in
place.
This means that your home filtration system will act as a
softener without adding sodium to your water. What about scale
build-up in the pipes and plumbing? Don’t worry; a multi-stage
filtration system will usually fix the problem.
There are whole house filters that change the calcium into
aragonite so it doesn’t stack up and create scale. Some
softeners can remove heavy metals and sulfates, but a
high-quality whole house system can soften the water while
removing a vast array of harmful substances like chlorine,
pharmaceutical drugs and pesticides, just to name a few.
And, unlike simple softeners, it can protect against viruses
and bacteria. So, consider purchasing a high-quality
multi-stage water filter, such as the four-stage dual-chamber
Aquasana Rhino system.
You’ll get both softer water and filtered drinkable water as
well. Not only that, you’ll have chemical-free showers and
baths and less chloroform gas in your air.
You might even find that your appliances last a little
longer. And these are only a few of the benefits.
